As the “Barbie” movie takes over the summer, those in Bryn Mawr and Philly can get a chance to watch the film a night early. The Bryn Mawr Film Institute (BMFI) is hosting a public early premiere on Thursday, July 20, at 7:30 pm.
Ticketholders will be able to walk the pink carpet and take photos in Barbie’s dream cinema. “Barbie” has been commended for its immersive set design and marketing. Now, those local to the area have the opportunity to join in on the experience.
The entire community is getting involved in the event, as local bars are volunteering their support. Viewers with valid IDs can enjoy a glass of pink wine, courtesy of The Grog Grill, starting at 6:30 pm.
BMFI is seeking to join in on the buzz surrounding the movie and the “Barbenheimer Challenge.” The challenge encourages fans to watch “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day, which is not a typical combination. Movie theaters have taken a massive hit since COVID and the increase in at-home film streaming. The excitement regarding the dual-release of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” is a chance for non-profit theaters like the BMFI to attract more guests.
The director of “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig, is a 2006 Seven Sisters alumna. Gerwig graduated from Bryn Mawr’s New York sister School, Barnard. Kate McKinnon is featured in the movie, and is also a 2006 graduate of Barnard’s partner school, Columbia. They both participated in their equivalent of the Lighted Fools, performing in the Varsity Show.
Commended for her unique take on gender in films, many are intrigued by what Gerwig will do with “Barbie.” She has been criticized for her white feminist approach to casting and storytelling, so “Barbie” could be a chance for her to break this pattern.
Aside from the promotional materials catching eyes — from clothes to dating apps to food — the storyline is drawing attention. The concept of Barbie (Margot Robbie) having an existential crisis and being forced to navigate philosophical quandaries with Ken (Ryan Gosling) in the human world, is enticing to even those who are not fans of the doll.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office. Don’t forget to wear pink!
