On November 4, the South Asian Students Association (SAS) and the Dharmic Students Association (DSA) hosted a night of celebration in the Great Hall. Open to all and surrounded by decorations and food, the event was a huge success.
Starting at 4pm, students dressed in traditional clothing gathered in the Great Hall to celebrate the Festival of Lights with friends and peers. SAS and DSA provided a vast quantity of Indian food for attendees, from a multitude of chutneys to gulab janum alongside several curry’s and rice. Lined across the table was also vada, paratha, chole and aloo matar. Sitting around the tables, students had the opportunity to hand paint Diyas which are lamps representing the triumph of light over dark.
Roshan Perry (‘25), President of SAS addressed the students, thanking them for coming to celebrate the night with them. Afreen dancers also put on a dance performance after dinner as the rest of the students cheered and clapped.
Throughout the night, dancing continued and students took photographs and indulged in a night celebrating South Asian Culture amongst their peers. At nightfall, students all gathered outside the great hall to light firecrackers and end the night filled with light and laughter.
Perry shared with the Bi-Co News, and Bryn Mawr College, that “Diwali was a fun night of cultural connection and creating a space for South Asian students and culture on campus. I am grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the South Asian diaspora with dance, food, and collective joy.”
The Diwali celebration is an event that is cherished by the student body at Bryn Mawr and is always an incredible night!
