Amidst the change of the seasons, crumbling of the leaves, and the early streaky orange sunsets, Bryn Mawr and Haverford athletes were in the heights of their respective seasons.
Bryn Mawr
Field Hockey
Bryn Mawr’s field hockey team had high expectations after they got to the Centennial Conference Championships last year and lost in overtime to John Hopkins. The team came together this year ready to get back to work and beat their own record from last year, which was the best in Bryn Mawr’s history.
The team fought hard all season long and played with passion. They made it to the Centennial Conference Semifinals, where they sadly lost to John Hopkins again. Several players—including Eva Yacura, Reba Ervin, Maggie Barilla, Novy Goetgeouk and Sarah Chapman—were named to the 2023 All Conference Team.
Rowing
Bryn Mawr’s rowing team also had an impressive season. At their final regatta of the season, the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta, their boats made impressive times. Bryn Mawr’s V8, Frosh/ Novice 8 and Frosh/Novice 4 all came in 1st. Their 1LV4 came in 2nd and their 2V4 came in 6th place. The team put in many early practice times with chilly weather on the river. Their work clearly paid off!
Cross Country
Next to Bryn Mawr’s Cross Country team, which came in 14 at the NCAA Metro Regional Championships.
Volleyball
Additionally, the volleyball team went 3-17.
Soccer
The soccer team went 3-10-3 with a tie to Haverford.
Haverford
On the other half of the Bi-Co, Haverford’s sports teams also stood out in the Centennial Conference.
Track & Cross Country
Haverford’s cross country teams ran far ahead this year. The women’s cross country team placed fourth in the Centennial Conference.
Alice Sappenfield was named the Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year as well as the NCAA All-Metro Region. Dominique Monroy was awarded the 2023 Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team.
The Men’s cross country team placed second in the Centennial Conference and 1st in the NCAA Metro Regions, which was their third consecutive NCAA Metro Region Championship win. The team is climbing their way up to the top as they are currently ranked 32 in the nation!
Peter LaRocheelle, Nathaniel Leighninger and Seasmus Fraser were named to the 2023 First-Team All Centennial Conference and Luca Ponticello was named to the Second-Team All Centennial Conference team. Additionally, Sammy Schindel was named to the 2023 Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team and the coaching staff was also awarded the Centennial Conference coaching staff of the year. We are proud of all the hard work that these student-athletes put in this season and have had a great time watching them in their meets.
Field Hockey
From the track to the field, let’s move on to Haverford’s field hockey team. The team went 2-8, but had a win over the nearby NJ college Rowan for the first time since 2021! Zoey Despines was named the Centennial Conference Honorable Mention and Abigail Trapp was named to the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship team.
Soccer
Continuing down the field, Haverford’s Women’s soccer team was 6-9-2 and the Men’s soccer team was 5-4-8.
Sadie Kim and Conrad Coyanda-Parkezes were named to the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team. Keep up the good work representing the Friends culture on the field!
Volleyball
We are almost to our final destination for the fall recap, but first let’s go to the court, where Haverford’s Volleyball team was 11-14. Many players stood out this season with Kira Chaney being named the Centennial Conference Rookie of the Year, Taylor Jones was named to the First Team All Centennial Conference, and Sydney Rucker was named to the Centennial Conference All-Sportsmanship Team.
Cricket
Do you know what Haverford’s oldest sport is? Well, we are going to wrap up this recap with Haverford’s first sport on campus that began in the mid-19th century, which is cricket! Haverford’s cricket team is still going strong and was 3-2 this season with a win over Colombia.
Winter Sports Starting
Our fall sports teams were busy this year on the water, field, and court. We are proud of all the student-athletes who worked hard to balance their academics with their games, matches and regattas. And we are especially proud of all the sportsmanship mentions that our teams got mentions for as that is what stands out most about how our teams played their fall seasons: with grit, determination, and respect.
Get ready for the winter sports season, games are already underway.
