Bi-Co Sports Updates Sept. 29-Oct. 5

The Bryn Mawr soccer team only competed in one match this week, holding Johns Hopkins University to a score of 0-3. Despite the team having three goals scored against them, first-year goalie Maeve Slemko recorded a season high of nineteen saves. Score-wise, this is one of the best games the Owls have had in recent history against Johns Hopkins, who are currently ranked No. 9 nationally. 

Haverford’s soccer teams participated in a “Play With Pride” double header against Dickinson College on Saturday. Play With Pride, Haverford’s LGBTQ+ student-athlete group, decorated the field with rainbow flags while the women’s basketball team sold concessions. 

The Haverford Men’s team lost their game 2-1, bringing their conference record to 0-3-1 for the year. Haverford Women’s soccer had more success though, winning their match against Dickinson 3-2. As of Sunday they stand third in the Centennial Conference with a record of 2-0-1. 

Bryn Mawr field hockey started this week off strong, rising six spots in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll to No. 10, the highest they have been ranked in the history of the program. In further recognition of the Owls’ performance last week, senior captain Novy Goetgeluk was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts. 

On Wednesday, the Owls beat Swarthmore College 1-0 in a very intense and aggressive game. They went goalless for the first half, but senior Sophie Vagts scored four minutes into the third quarter off of a corner. This game was dedicated to Morgan’s Message, an organization focused on destigmatizing mental health for student-athletes competing at all levels. This was organized by the Bryn Mawr ambassadors for Morgan’s Message, three of which are field hockey players. 

Saturday, Bryn Mawr field hockey played away at Franklin & Marshall College, ending the game 0-1. This unfortunately broke their seven game win streak and marked their first conference loss of the season.

Over on Swan Field, Haverford Field Hockey won their Play With Pride game against Gettysburg College 2-1. The game was tied 1-1 until senior Amy Kim was able to score with nine minutes left in the game, logging her first goal of the season. 

Bryn Mawr tennis made history this week, giving their head coach, Doanh Wang, his fifty-third win at the school. He now holds the record for most matches won in Bryn Mawr history. The Owls won all three doubles matches and five out of six singles matches against Shippensburg University this Wednesday.

The cross country team sent five athletes to compete in the Dan Talbot Open this Friday, placing first overall. They claimed first through fifth places, marking the first time in recent history that the Bryn Mawr cross country team has earned a perfect score at a meet. In addition to this, four of the five athletes set personal records and the other set a season best.

A second group of cross country runners competed at the Paul Short Invitational, placing forty-fifth. Another three members of the team had personal records at this meet. 

Bryn Mawr volleyball celebrated the juniors on their team this week during their home game against Gwynedd Mercy. Despite losing the match 0-3, they were very competitive throughout all three sets. 

Haverford women’s volleyball found success this weekend, beating Dickinson 3 sets to 0. Despite a strong start from their opponents, the Fords were able to shut them down, with a total of fourteen aces for the team and near-record-breaking eight digs from junior Eliana Brown.
