Women’s Soccer Overall 3-4-3

On Wednesday, September 24, Haverford’s women’s soccer team posted an incredible come-from-behind win that handed them their first Centennial Conference win of the season. After falling to an 0-2 deficit in the first half of the game, Haverford scored all three of their goals in the second half, with the decisive kick coming as first year Emma Murray’s first collegiate goal. On Saturday, the team faced Johns Hopkins, coming up short with a 2-0 loss. For Hopkins, Carolyn Johnson scored both goals, but Haverford goalkeeper Allie Billups kept the team in the game as she saved 8 shots on ten shots faced.

Haverford men’s soccer is off to a historic start this season, with the best starting season record since 1977. With no losses so far and more wins currently than total last season, they are heading into conference play strong. The most notable game so far is their win over Rowan University, who were ranked #2 nationally at the time, their highest ranked win since 2015. Sophomore goalkeeper, Grayson Benson, has been named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week after making six saves during the Ford’s game against Gettysburg, and recording five shut-outs in a row. The rest of the team is also looking strong, with 14 individuals scoring so far this season. 

Field Hockey Overall 8-1

Haverford Field Hockey is on a 5 game win streak, currently holding a record of 8-1 overall and 2-0 within the conference. This is the Fords’ first season with three wins over nationally ranked teams (#12 SUNY Cortland, #12 Rowan University, and #16 Franklin and Marshall College). The Fords have also had three players given Centennial Conference recognitions: Senior Captain Holly Vincent was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week for her two goals and three assists over two games. The first being the Ford’s win over Stockton University and the second over #12 SUNY Cortland. Three weeks later the Fords had a sweep of Centennial Conference weekly awards with senior Naomi York being named Offensive Player of the Week and sophomore Steph Ionescu being named Defensive Player of the Week. York scored three goals across two games, the first contributing to the upset of #16 Franklin and Marshall and the other two in their shutout against DeSales University. Ionescu was also named an honorable mention for National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III Defensive Player of the Week. Ionescu is a key part of the Fords’ defense and had a 10 save effort in their 3-2 win over #16 Franklin and Marshall.

Volleyball Overall 9-4

Though Haverford volleyball will not start conference play until Oct. 4, they are starting their season off with a solid winning record out of conference. The team is currently being led in kills by first-year Elizabeth Cella, recording 158, and in assists by senior Cameryn DeBlecourt, recording 215. The team is seeing individual success as well, with senior Eliana Brown recording her 100th career ace during their match against Christopher Newport University. Sophomore Fiona Moord is also getting some recognition, being named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the season, and continuing to lead the team in blocks. 

Women’s Cross Country

at Mainline Invitational 7th

Haverford women’s cross country participated in their first collegiate meet of the season, finishing 7th out of 10 teams. They beat two conference teams, Muhlenberg and Bryn Mawr, as well as Shippenburg. The Fords were led by juniors Alice Sappenfield and Anastasia Jacobs, finishing 33rd and 34th, followed by senior Savannah Shaw in 40th. 

Men’s Cross Country

at Mainline Invitational 5th

Haverford men’s cross country placed 5th at their first collegiate meet of the season, beating Shippenburg, Lehigh, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Widener, and Muhlenburg. First-year Simon Lane finished 8th overall and was the first DIII runner to cross the finish line. Lane was named Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week after this performance. The next two to finish for the Fords were senior Micah Lachman in 22nd and junior Owen Bluman in 33rd.

Saturday’s game versus Amwell Valley proved to be quite a show, as sophomore Agastya Singh scored the first century (100 runs) of his Haverford cricket career and the team hit a season-high 245 runs total. On Sunday, the team headed to Merion Cricket Club for their only away match of the fall season where they improved upon last week’s showing versus Merion (84/8) but came away with a loss despite their best efforts. The team has two more games in the fall season, coming this Saturday and Sunday versus the Penn Alumni and Drexel University.

BRYN MAWR

Soccer Overall 5-5

Bryn Mawr Soccer got off to a strong start, currently holding a record of  5-5, which is better than their record at this time last year (3-4-2). This is only the second time in program history that they’ve opened a season with five straight wins (2011 being the last), and the first time the Owls have ever opened a season with five straight shutouts. In all repeat matchups from last season, the Owls have improved or held their outcomes. When the Owls played Hood College last season they tied 0-0, and this season they won 1-0. For Cedar Crest College, they improved from a 0-0 tie to a 3-0 win, and for Notre Dame of Maryland University, the Owls took away wins for both matchups. Their historic five shutout opening resulted in first year goalkeeper Lily Blackman being named the Centennial Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week. In their first conference matchup of the season, the Owls held off the Green Terror of McDaniel College for most of the game, only falling 1-0 which is their best performance against McDaniel since 2012.

The Bryn Mawr Field Hockey team opened conference play with a tough loss to #3 Johns Hopkins. Bryn Mawr came away with one goal, scored by Lucie Burgess. This marked her sixth goal on the season as the team’s top goal and point scorer. Addison Graupensperger and Rachel Ofner logged their first collegiate goals, pushing Bryn Mawr to victory in their 2-1 win against Vassar. Annick Van Blerkom broke the all-time assist record, tallying her 20th career assist in the team’s victory over Susquehanna.  

Volleyball Overall 3-7

The Bryn Mawr Volleyball team began to wrap up non-conference play this week, preparing for their first conference match against Johns Hopkins. In their 0-3 loss to Cairn, the team fought back in the third set, with a stand-out 3 kills, 2 aces, and 2 blocks from Elise Perry. The team kept close sets against Neumann with consistent lead changes, ultimately dropping three consecutive sets. Emma Loller leads the team with 86 kills and 72 digs on the season, and Tula Reihman leads with 22 blocks.

Cross Country

at Mainline Invitational 10th

In their second meet of the season, Bryn Mawr cross country finished 10th overall. Despite their placement, the team itself has some wins, with Eva Ackley finishing first for the Owls in 55th place with an all-time personal best. Sophomore Alyson Bostrom and senior Sofie Prieto both recorded collegiate bests as well.
