The Bi-College German department hosted Mocktoberfest on October 5, a play on the traditional German holiday Oktoberfest. The holiday celebrates Bavarian culture through drinks, games, food, and entertainment. The Bi-College Mocktoberfest was held at VCAM, where department faculty and students gathered to dine on traditional German bratwurst, Philly Pretzel Factory pretzels, and other fall-themed refreshments. There were also games, props for photos, and German music playing, echoing Oktoberfest festivities from around the globe.
Dr. Margaret Strair, Lecturer and Professor of German at Bryn Mawr, shared that the event “…started last year as an idea from students, and we hope to continue it in the future in collaboration with Haverford’s German Club. It’s been a great way to build community and relax before Fall Break while enjoying some German food and music.”
The German department hopes that, beyond language classes, historical or cultural courses and events like Mocktoberfest can give students a deeper insight into German language and culture. Following Mocktoberfest, the German department will be hosting a variety of events celebrating German culture and highlighting Germanic studies.
