Founded in 2011 by a group of students who sought to create a more supportive campus for undocumented students, Mawrters for Immigrant Justice (MIJ) remains dedicated to raising awareness, organizing dialogue, and creating a safe space for Bryn Mawr’s undocu+ student community.
Mawrters for Immigrant Justice is an activism-oriented club comprised of undocu+ students alongside supporters and allies. “We are focused on prioritising [undocu+] students and acknowledging the many barriers that they face,” said MIJ President Angie Quiroz ‘26. “We want to provide a safe space where students can feel like their struggles are visible.”
Diana Escobar ‘27, Vice President of MIJ, highlighted the importance of their club’s initiative in the context of the present moment. “With the political climate of the current day, having a place like MIJ encourages collectivity in the student body,” said Escobar. “We want to make sure that the most vulnerable members of our community are being taken care of while also not letting them forget to take care of themselves.”
MIJ has hosted a variety of events throughout the semester, including a gallery walk on October 28 as part of their undocu+ visibility week programming. Held in the Cloisters, the gallery showcased artwork created by Bryn Mawr students centring narratives of migration. The event was followed by a group reflection guided by Professor Jennifer Harford Vargas, in which students voiced appreciation for their peers’ artworks and gave insights into their own creative processes.
In the spring, MIJ plans to host teach-ins, table on campus and continue fundraising for Juntos, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Latine community in South Philadelphia. They encourage students to reach out to them with any questions and follow their Instagram, @brynmawr.mij, to stay updated on their upcoming events.
