Phillies Kick Off Season with Mixed Results

Following their World Series appearance, and subsequent loss, the Phillies are seeking to redeem themselves in the 2023 MLB season.

After securing several key players during the offseason, including pitchers Yunior Marte and Gregory Soto, Philadelphia made clear their intentions for another playoff run. These additions to the roster are intended to provide defensive support for offensive powerhouses Kyle Schwarber, Alec Bohm, and Bryce Harper.

When the season kicked off, the Phillies were immediately grappling with high expectations. Unfortunately, after a pitiful 0-4 start to the season, they continue to struggle towards a 0.500 win percentage, as they currently have a 11-13 win-loss rate. Part of this can be attributed to Bryce Harper’s elbow injury. After receiving surgery in November 2022, Harper and the Phillies remain unsure of his recovery timeframe, slating 2024 as a possible return date.

However, within the disappointing performances lie some standout outings. In a 14-3 win over the Reds, the Phillies recorded 9 runs in the first inning (a whopping 23 in total). Outfielder Brandon Marsh recorded four hits, while shortstop Trea Turner and second baseman Brandon Stott both recorded three hits. In a 15-3 win over the Marlins, Alec Bohm recorded 6 RBIs and pitcher Matt Strahm allowed 0 runs in 5 innings with 6 strikeouts.

With Harper injured and a shaky start overall, the Phillies seem to have an unsure future.
